A Superb Gaming Machine — And It Looks Really Cool Too, December 19, 2013

To call this monster a “laptop” pushes the definition of laptop computer. Yeah, this’ll fit in your lap–if you’re Shaq. Or maybe Santa. But you’ll want to ask Santa to bring you one anyway because it’s a top notch gaming machine.

As a gaming “laptop” it’s meant to be used from a desktop, or maybe a sturdy couch. You don’t want to be dragging it on a long airplane trip. It’s a beautiful, big machine made of “anodized aluminum” and “reinforced by a magnesium-alloy frame.” This is to protect the stunning 17″ screen (1920 x 1080, low-glare) and other interior components. All told it weighs in at something like 8 pounds.

But it can handle gaming like a dream. Its 3.4 Ghz i7 handled some of the latest games beautifully. Client-side games like Assassin’s Creed III rendered perfectly and fast. Other games that ran on the Unreal Engine, which is processor intensive, ran without a single hiccup. Moving to online gaming, A MMORPG like WoW was seamless, even in heavy 25-man raiding at high resolution.

I’m very, very happy with this machine.

    Some other comments:

Unboxing was fun. It comes in a black case with a padded black foam interior that, when opened, feels like you are getting the latest device from James Bond’s Q Branch or the weapons department of MiB.

It has more cosmetic lights on the outside than the spaceship from Close Encounters. You can also endlessly adjust the exterior lights’ color scheme; pretty cool.

When it runs hot the fan of course kicks on: it’s not quiet, but not deafening either.

I plugged in a Razer Naga mouse and it recognized it instantly, no driver needed to be installed.

The 750 GB HD might be considered a bit skimpy for a laptop in this price range, but it’s serviceable. Same thing with Windows 8. It’s there, it runs fine, and underneath all the gaming tech it’s a Windows machine (with nothing preinstalled but the OS itself.)

Setup was easy. The 802.11bgn Wifi recognized my home network and connected instantly. Other initial configuration processes were pretty quick.

Alienware has been around a long time and (even as a subset of Dell for almost a decade now) they still produce some of the best stock gaming machines available. From the specs and performance through the overall aesthetic feel, this Alienware 17-Inch Gaming Laptop has delivered a great gaming experience so far.

The set up and installation went along smoothly. The keyboard, base, alienware name below the screen, and the “alien image” on the back of the screen automatically light up in blue, when I turn on and use this laptop. The weight of this laptop is on the heavier side (16 pounds)–but the design is pretty unique.

The lighting effect can be especially appreciated in the dark and is what makes it look expensive (although I like the blue lighting, which is how it came, up to twenty different colors can be applied to ten different zones for some interesting lighting) .

Unlike the description, which states this laptop has Windows 7, it actually has the latest Windows 8 operating system on it (with all that it encompasses, whether you love or hate Windows 8–it does take some getting used to). The 4th gen. i7–4700MQ processor is super fast, and comfortable to use.

I use this laptop with my Logitech M525 mouse, and it works pretty well. Of course it would have been good to have more memory to match the super fast processor, but 8GB RAM suffices for regular usage purposes (the hard drive is 750 GB ).

I thought the sound system could be a little better–I watched some video streaming and Youtube online and thought the sound quality was on the weaker side (not as sharp as I would have liked). Volume-wise, though, it can get very, very loud.

Though the image quality produced by the included camera wasn’t anything special, the overall quality of the picture and resolution of the laptop itself is amazing–very sharp, very bright, and very vibrant. It’s especially enjoyable to view on the 17-inch screen.

It also has 4 USB ports, which is pretty convenient to plug in multiple items at once. Supposedly it can also prioritize speed according to network traffic that requires more speed.

On the other hand, this laptop doesn’t come with a pre-installed anti-virus program so getting one and installing it is one important thing that needs to get done before this laptop can be fully utilized internet-wise (I had to wait for a week until I got my McAfee and then finally installed it, before I risked using it). Overall though, I’m in love with it.
