This review is from: Toshiba C55-A5384 Intel® Core i3-3120M 4GB RAM 500GB (Personal Computers)

I’ll break down the laptop in categories and then give an overall review near the bottom.

Perfromance: The i3 processor handles hd videos just fine. You can stream 2-3 at a time. If you aren’t familiar with computers, the i3 is the base processor I would recommend starting at. You can use this laptop for light gaming. Depends on the game and what the requirements are, but it will play them on their lowest settings. The 4gb of ram is average. The more ram you have the more things you can do an view on the laptop. With 4gb you can view a couple web pages or watch 2-3 videos before things slow down. I’ve had it slow down for a couple seconds when streaming 2 1080p movies on youtube and opening a couple other tabs, but overall this laptop is good for daily use and you won’t see it bog down in light conditions.

Design and Layout: This has a numerical pad on the right hand side. Seperate volume and screen brightness buttons. The touchpad can be touchy with windows 8 on certain laptops however this one seems fine for the week that I have had it. Mouse buttons are solid. The finish or texture of the plastic on the laptop is a matte black with a semigloss and it has tiny horizontal ridges. So it’s not a flat surface texture or randomized texture. I like it, except dust can get in the grooves an may require a towel to clean off. But by no means is that a negative. The positive is it wont attract fingerprints as easily as other flat glossy surface laptops. The only negative about the design is the cd drive eject button. If you look where the cd drive is on the left side the eject button is right below it and in order to eject it you have to lift up the laptop and press with your finger. It’s annoying. Most laptop cd eject buttons are on the cd tray itslef and or protruding out a bit. The entire back side is removable so you can upgrade hardware fairly easily.

Ports: 2 usb 2.0 and 1 usb 3.0. Usually it’s the other way around with most laptops having 2 usb 3.0 ports. However most people only have usb 2.0 devices anyways so it’s not a big deal right now. It comes with a vga and hdmi port which is rare as most laptops come with hdmi only. So that is somewhat of a plus if you use vga. The ethernet/lan/cat5 port is on the right side and seperate microphone and headphone ports on the right side as well.

Sound: The biggest downside the this laptop is the sound processor and speakers. I’d give it a 2.5/5. I could watch a movie on it but I’m too use to having nice altec lansing speakers with dolby advanced audio on my other laptop to enjoy it. They aren’t horrible and they are listenable, it’s just they have that cheap tinny sound somewhat. They’re good if you just need to listen to something. you can always buy a sound system to plug into and have better sound for movies or music.

Battery Life: I have yet to test the fill battery life of the computer but it states 4 hours and it is a lithium ion battery so I would say it will last 3-4 hours depending on what you are doing and it should have a great life long life expectancy.

Screen: The resolution is typical and the screen brightness and clarity is fairly good. I would say it is just above average, nothing special though.

Bloatware: The only thing you really have to remove or uninstall is Norton unless you plan on using it. Everything else can stay on it as it’s toshiba’s factory software.

WiFi Range: I get a really good signal in my room at 5/5 bars where I usually get 3-4/5. So that is a good plus for anyone with a bigger home or poor a poor wifi signal.

Webcam: Webcam is average with a built in microphone with average recording sound. Nothing special and nothing dissappointing.

Windows 8: People hate windows 8. I go to school for IT and for the past year that I have used it I don’t mind it at all. The advantage I love over windows 7 is how fast it boots up and shuts down. About 30 seconds for each. There is a desktop mode and windows 8.1, which is a free upgrade, includes a start button. It’s new and that’s why people do not like it. Just pure complaining about having to adjust. So if you can adjust to new things you will be fine with it. There is no reason to dislike windows 8 besides having previous software not be able to install on it. Everything that windows 7 has is on windows 8, it’s just a different layout. Almost every new laptop has it so you might as well get used to it. I think you will enjoy it eventually or be able to tolerate it if you really don’t like it.

Toshiba Brand: Toshiba is known for having reliable laptops. Some may say otherwise but to me and from my experience and research they are reliable. They aren’t HP or Dell but they are a good brand name laptop.

Overall: This is a great durable laptop. It is all plastic on the outside like almost every other laptop, but it is very durable and not flimsy or cheap feeling. The…
